This intensive 3-day workshop, February 18-20, will teach attendees the principles of effective and efficient medical education in the clinical setting. A supplemental ½-day workshop on February 21 will apply these principles to developing standardized patient cases in augmenting clinical education programs.
Workshop leader: Jon Martell, MD Associate Professor of Medicine
Theoretical and practical concepts in different areas of clinical education will be presented, including bedside teaching and assessment of student performance. Presentations are supplemented with small group sessions, role playing exercises, and videotape review. A formal standardized teaching exercise at the end of the workshop will allow the participants to practice and refine their teaching skills.
This workshop has been designed to help participants refine the following skills:
- Using effective communication to create value in the teaching encounter.
- Efficient Bedside teaching in the modern practice environment.
- Promoting student directed learning in clinical education.
- Adapting PBL and Evidence-Based techniques to clinical teaching.
- Using feedback techniques to enhance clinical education.
The supplemental ½-day workshop will use workshop skills and apply them to the development of standardized patient cases and clinical simulations.
This workshop is designed for medical educators at any level of experience who wish to improve the effectiveness of their clinical teaching. A special effort will be made to relate workshop techniques to different cultural contexts and changing medical practice.
